5 Testing, assessment and sampling methods
5.1 General
5.1.1 Preparation of fttings for testing
Combinations of fitting size within a test rig are possible. The minimum distance between the fitting under test and each end of the assembly shall be 100 mm. Adaptor fittings used to connect the test pipework to a pump for example, may also be considered as a test ftting.New fittings are required for each test.
NOTE See also EN 1254-20:2021, Annex A.
5.1.2 Test temperature Tests shall be conducted at a temperature of (23士5) °C unless otherwise stated.
5.1.3 Tolerances When tolerances are not specified, the values shall be within t 5 % of the nominal value.
5.2 Internal pressure
Use the test method described in EN 1254-20:2021, Clause 5 using the parameters shown in Table 1.
5.3 Tightness: Integrity of fabricated ftting bodies or having an ‘as cast’ microstructure
Test, after the final machining operation, using the test method described in EN 1254-20:2021, Clause 7 using the parameters shown in Table 2.
5.4 Durability
5.4.1 Durability of internal pressure: Resistance to stress corrosion
Use the test method described in EN 1254-20:2021, Clause 15.
5.4.2 Durability of tightness: Resistance to dezincification
Use the test method described in EN 1254 -20:2021, Clause 17.
5.5 Wall thickness at threaded portions of adaptor fittings
5.5.1 Type testing
The wall thickness shall be measured with a special micrometer or special purpose gauge, or the fitting shall be sectioned and the wall thickness assessed with a calliper or equivalent instrument. The accuracy of the measuring instrument shall be at least one decimal greater than the value specified in EN 1254-20:2021, 4.1 for that diameter. The wall thickness shall be measured at three or more discrete places and efforts shall be made to find the minimum.
5.5.2 FPC testing
The wall thickness shall be measured as per &5J. or with a special purpose gauge. The accuracy of the measuring instrument shall be at least one decimal greater than the value specified in EN 1254-20:2021, 4.1 for that diameter.
5.6 Dimensions of tail pipe ends for swivel fittings
The dimensions of tail pipe ends for swivel fittings shall be assessed with a gauge, a calliper, a micrometer or equivalent instrument. The accuracy of the measuring instrument shall be at least one decimal greater than the value specified in EN 1254-20:202 1, 4.2 for that diameter.
5.7 Dimensions of gas union connectors
5.7.1 Type testing
The dimensions of gas union connectors shall be assessed with a calliper, a special micrometer, a special purpose gauge or equivalent instrument. The accuracy of the measuring instrument shall be at least one decimal greater than the value specified in EN 1254-20:202 1, 4.3 for that diameter.
5.7.2 FPC testing
The dimensions of gas union connectors shall be assessed as per £7.1. The accuracy of the measuring instrument shall be at least one decimal greater than the value specified in EN 1254-20:2021, 4.3 for that diameter.
5.8 Threaded end dimensions
The compliance of the thread dimensions and profile shall be assessed with appropriately sized “GO’ / “No GO gauges in accordance with ISO 7-2 or EN 10226-3 or ISO 228-2 as applicable.
5.9 Bore dimensions
The fitting is assessed unassembled.
The bore dimensions shall be assessed using one of the following methods:
1. A sphere matching the specified minimum bore dimension (+0.0mm -0.1mm) shall pass freely
under gravity through the fitting;
2. A gauge or internal calliper or internal micrometer or equivalent can be used to determine the bore dimensions;
3, A fitting can he sectioned, and the cross-sectional area quantified by a planimeter or equivalent method, and shall be greater than or equal to the cross-sectional area of the specified minimum bore.
5.10 Alignment of the fitting ends
The alignment of the fitting ends with reference to the specified axis shall be measured with a profile
projector (shadow graph) or gauges and shall be expressed in degrees.
6 Evaluation of conformity
6.1 General
The compliance ot threaded fittings with the requirements of this document and with the performances shall be demonstrated by:
— type testing;
— factory production control.
6.2 Type testing
6.2.1 General
Assessment previously performed in accordance with the provisions of this document, may be considered, provided that this assessment was performed to the same or a more rigorous assessment method, on the same product or products of similar design, construction and functionality, such that the results are applicable to the product in question.
For the purposes of assessment, the products may be grouped into families, where it is considered that the results for one or more characteristics from any one product within the family are representative for that same characteristic for all products within that same family.
Products may be grouped in different families for different characteristics. In addition, type testing shall be:
— carried out for all applicable characteristics included in the standard:
— on first application of this document; or
— at the beginning of the production of new or modified threaded fittings, unless a member of the same product range; or
— at the beginning of a new or modified method of production. where the modification may affect the stated properties;
— repeated for the characteristic(s) in question, whenever a change occurs in the threaded fittings design. in the raw material(s) or in the supplier of the components, and/or in the method of production (subject to the definition of a family), which may affect significantly one or more of the characteristics.
Where components are used whose characteristics have already been determined, by the component manufacturer, on the basis of assessment methods of other product standards, these characteristics need not be re-assessed. The specifications of these components shall be documented.
6.2.2 Test samples, testing and compliance criteria
The samples of threaded fittings to be tested/assessed shall be in accordance with Table 3.
6.2.3 Test reports
The results of the determination of the product type shall be documented in test reports.
6.3 Factory production control (FPC)
6.3.1 General
An FPC system shall be established, documented, operated and maintained.
The FPC system shall consist of procedures, regular inspections and tests and/or assessments and the use of the results to control raw and other incoming materials or components, equipment, the production process and the product.
All the elements and provisions shall be documented in a systematic manner in the form of written policies and procedures.
The responsibility, authority and the relationship between personnel that manages, performs or verifies work affecting product quality, shall be defined.BS EN 1254-4 pdf download.Copper and copper alloys
